The Samuel Peto - Folkestone

Visited 21st February 2014.

Having left Ashford it took about half an hour to get to Folkestone and another ten minutes to find somewhere to park. This we then walked to The Samuel Peto where we had a very pleasant surprise. The entrance was very imposing and inside it was spectacular. Mrs S. found us a booth upstairs while I went and ordered a pint of the Oatmeal guest ale for myself and a large latte for Mrs S. It wasn't very busy and it would have been easy to feel a bit lost in the place but the many booths gave a nice feeling of intimacy and privacy. This was quite easily the most impressive pub I had been in for quite a while, it's a shame it wasn't my local! We reluctantly left and headed for Margate with only one quick stop as we were leaving Folkestone to take a few pictures of a rather tall brick bridge.

The County Hotel - Ashford

Visited 21st February 2014.

It's that time of year again, the time when we make our pilgrimage to Margate for the annual dinner dance. This year the plan for the weekend includes a visit to two Wetherspoon pubs. They are both a little off the direct Margate route, well the opposite side of the county really but at least they are in the same county as we are. Mrs SatNav played her part well and after only a couple of hours we were pulling into the car park at the rear of The County Hotel. We paid for an hour knowing that the first hour was refundable if we spent at least £5 at the bar, we were hungry so we knew we would. The inside of the pub was dark and furnished in a traditional style and also incredibly busy. The place was packed and there seemed little chance of getting a table, however we got lucky and Mrs S. managed to bag one while I started my wait at the bar to be served. It being a Friday I ordered the cod and chips for myself along with a pint of Oyster stout and Mrs S. also opted for a cod and chips but with a pint of Pepsi. While waiting for the food to arrive I remembered that I still needed to redeem my car park ticket so ended up queuing again, still at least I had something to do while waiting for the food. We overran the hour by a short while but nobody complained and we were soon off to the next pub on my list of the day.
