The Baron of Hinckley - Hinckley

Visited 17th June 2013.

Our final pub of the day and of our Download weekend away was The Baron of Hinckley, just a few miles away from The Felix Holt. A dark, narrow pub that went back a fair way including a dining area up a small flight of stairs at the rear. I had a pint of Pepsi with Mrs S. having a small Pepsi. It was quite busy and also the patrons were quite loud. We didn't stay long here as by now the rest of our party, Mrs S. included were quite keen to get back home and we still had a ninety minute drive. Which passed uneventfully. A great weekend at Download and a few more pubs ticked off the list, not bad.

The Felix Holt - Nuneaton

A short walk from The William White is The Felix Holt. Very much a contrast to the previous pub. A medium sized, light, square room that was very busy. Whilst not as "architecturally" interesting as the previous pub the friendlier bar staff gave it a much better feel. I had a double Buffao Trace and Pepsi with Mrs S. settling for a hot chocolate with lots of canned cream. The barmaid was very obviously enjoying herself building a whipped cream tower with a huge amount of intense concentration and Mrs S. was presented with one of the best looking mugs of hot chocolate I have ever seen in a Wetherspoons.

The William White - Nuneaton

Iron Maiden headline at Download

We had a great time at the Download festival but as always there comes a time when you have to go home and today's the day. But first we will pop into a few 'spoons, not least for breakfast. We were all exhausted and slept in so late we only just made it. The William White turned out to be a medium sized, dark pub with a central bar and lots of booths around the edges and unusually there was music playing. I had a large English with a large latte with Mrs S. going for the eggs Benedict and a cup of tea. Maybe it was a bit early (11.45 am) but the barman taking our order seemed as though it was all a bit of an effort and would rather have been anywhere else and had a strange habit of allowing the hot milk to run over his thumb as he held back the froth while making the latte. To say I was unimpressed would have been an understatement. The breakfast when it arrived was not the best one I've ever had although not the worst either but it was a shame as it was a nice pub but we left it feeling a bit deflated by the experience.

The Bear and Ragged Staff - Bedworth

Visited 13th June 2013.

Something a little bit different is happening for us this weekend. A few of us are spending a long weekend at the Download festival. This means we have all had to leave work promptly, get home, pack and hit the road. It also means that none of us have had time for any tea so after about an hour and a half of driving we found somewhere to park in Bedworth and went  in search of The Bear and Ragged Staff, which we found with no effort at all. We went in and found a place to sit, which was pretty easy as it wasn't very busy. I ordered a Chilli dog with a pint of Meerkat Mild guest ale with Mrs S. opting for a jacket potato with tuna and coleslaw with a large Pepsi. Our food took an age to arrive and for the people we were with even longer, to the point where they were offered free hot drinks by way of an apology. We were told the chef was working in the kitchen on his own and that was why we had to wait so long for our food. When the food when it did arrive though it was fine. We drank and ate up and headed off to the hotel where we were to spend the night in anticipation of our big first day at Download.
