The Stannary Court - Plympton

Visited 23rd October 2014.

I spent yesterday visiting a friend in Exeter but today I'm back on the pub trail. The plan is to spend the day in Plymouth and thereby complete the 'spoons in the West Country (at least until Tim opens a few more). After a little check on the Wetherspoon website I find that the first pub of the day is just outside Plymouth and about an hour after leaving Exeter I'm sat in the pub waiting for my eggs benedict and large latte. I didn't have to wait very long as the service was very quick. I like being in Devon, especially when the barmaid says "Alright my love" in a broad Devonshire accent. The pub itself was neat and tidy and furnished in the traditional 'spoons manner with lots of wood, books and a few booths. There was also a handy free car park nearby. What's not to like?

The Greyhound - Bridport

Visited 21st October 2014.

I liked the third 'spoons of the day. It was one of those places that just seemed to be a maze of rooms and after being served my pint of Pepsi I enjoyed spending several minutes wandering through endless doorways exploring. At the time I visited most of the rooms were empty so I had a fantastic choice of where to sit, it was easily the most relaxed I had been all day and who can ask for more than that?

The Bath Arms - Warminster

Visited 21st October 2014.

My second pub of the day and it is a complete contrast to the previous pub. It is much quieter than the previous pub and again I have no problem getting served with a large latte and there are plenty of places for me to sit. The only problem is that most of the tables need clearing. I end up clearing a table so I can sit and drink my coffee. It's obviously not just me that has noticed because as I sit and write a few notes a couple walk past me on their way out and I overhear the lady say "I think they need more staff, every table is full of crap". Her words but exactly what I was thinking. As always first impressions count. It was a shame really as the pub itself was nicely furnished and decorated and it appeared to have been quite recent judging from the general wear and tear you might expect. One thing I did like was the heavily padded beam in the gents, I liked it as I did bang my head on it before realising how low it was! (And again, the toilet floor could have done with a mop and the sinks with a wipe over).

The Bear - Melksham

Visited 21st October 2014.

Mrs S. is working and I have a week off so I thought I would have a little bit of a day out and pay a visit to three pubs down towards the south west. The first of the three for today is The Bear. The original plan was to get up early and then take a leisurely drive arriving in plenty of time for a nice unhurried breakfast. The reality of course was that I went to bed late, got up late, set off late and arrived late! Severn minutes late to be exact. In the past I've arrive as little as one minute late and been told "sorry, we stop serving breakfast at 12". Luckily there was none of that nonsense today and it wasn't long before I was sat down with a hot traditional breakfast and a pint of Pepsi in front of me. In fact the order was taken efficiently, the food arrived quickly and with a smile and someone came to check that everything was okay. Looking around the pub you could see that it was busy with quite a few people eating but there were no tables waiting to be cleared and there was even someone refilling the milk jug and tidying a few empty sugar wrappers away. The pub had a very pleasant feel to it and I definitely enjoyed my visit.

The Flying Horse - Gatwick Airport

Visited 6th September 2014.

Mrs. S. and I have been so busy recently that when it was time to set off for our holiday I hadn't even had time to check if there were any 'spoons at Gatwick that we had not visited before. So it was a pleasant surprise to find one as we (Mrs S.) were checking out the duty frees. It was very busy with most people tucking in to the breakfast but even so we were served quickly
with a half of Doombar for me and a Pepsi for Mrs. S. by a very efficient barman. We only stayed long enough to finish our drinks as our flight was boarding. Woohoo, Tenerife here we come!
